SIMULATION AND CALCULATION OF WELDING DISTORTION IN BUTT JOINT OF ALUMINUM ALLOY

Abstract

Welding distortion is an inevitable phenomenon in all welding processes, it affects the quality of the welding structure, aesthetics and economics of welding products. This paper presents an application of Comsol software for predicting welding distortion in butt joint of A1060 aluminum alloy under different welding conditions. In addition, the distortion of the welded joint includes longitudinal shrinkage, transverse shrinkage and angular shrinkage is calculated based on experimental models. Comparing simulated and calculated results show very high compatibility which proves that the simulation method matches very well with the calculation theory. Moreover, the effect of welding current on the welding distortion is also given. Results show that welding deformation increases with increasing welding current and vice versa. The deformation of welding joints with different conditions can be predicted and is the basis for selecting the appropriate welding condition to achieve the smallest welding deformation.
